1. Identification: Spondylus linguafelis (Sowerby, 1843), Wananapaoa Islet, Oahu Island, Hawaii, dived by Takahashi from shipwreck in 32m depth, live taken specimen shell.
2. Description: One of the two most emblematic bivalves from this tropical paradise and muchtreasured by First Nation People, indeed thought to be sacred to Pele, the linguafelis is a famous Hawaii endemic which is much hated by divers for its bad habit of attaching all its body to the ground and producing a lower valve which can be literally as thin as paper! Consequently it is impossible to remove shells in natural habitat because it is strictly forbidden to remove any natural coral growth on which these shells grow, and pieces attached to volcanic rock are equally out of reach because such shells always get the lower valve badly damaged. Happily, the species has found a perfect habitat in sunken ships, and on the surface either carbon fibre or metal as well these shells grow very well, and here they also can be removed by divers. This is such a shell. Stunning fancy tangerine color accompanies this shell and of course it was cleaned all by hand, not just as other commercial shells which get a soaking in chemicals and chlorine bleach: this piece is natural and each of its countless spines was individually cleaned by hand. A piece of art which will keep its natural and intense color in the future. Fully documented and a conchologists dream come true. Please check the many different photos that show the shell from all angles: it seems the spines are so very thin the cameracant always catch them when looking at the shell laterally: rest assured all spines are fully preserved and the valve isdensely covered with these spines thinner than hair.
