Between 1955 and 1967, BC Ceramics Ltd. produced souvenirs and housewares for sale across Canada. Located on Hamilton Street in Vancouvers Yaletown district, BC Ceramics was headed by a husband-and-wife team, Walter and Herta Gerz. Combining unique decorative motifs, experimental glazes and modern European design, the company created products that reflected the vibrancy of the time. Unlike the craft methods employed by studio potters, BC Ceramics used moulds and other industrial methods that enabled them to sell their work in large quantities across the country. BC Ceramics was best known for its variety of surface decorations. Herta Gerz designed all of them. These decorations frequently depicted local flora and fauna and Native stories, but also reflected international design trends. Many of the designs embodied the optimism of the 1950s and 1960s in Canada and public interest in bold colour combinations and abstract art. Herta Gerz sold BC Ceramics to Sunburst Ceramics Ltd. in 1967.
