Benjamin Disraeli’s first novel, Lothair, was published in 1870 and was a commerical success, considered the first ever published by a prime minister. Here in Endymion, he crosses romance with a survey of British Politics of the mid 19th century. It both recreates and emphasizes the importance of aristocratic social influence on political fortunes. In the novel, it is female influence that helps the conventional, insipid, courteous Endymion, a Whig, to rise to the premiership; he also manages to progress by not offending the insular prejudices of a commercial country. Endymion is named after the shepherd from Greek mythology, which would have been familiar to eighteenth-century readers from the 1818 poem by John Keats.

Rubwear to the leather on and around the spine. Small chipping to the edges of the boards. Binding is solid throughout. Pencilled markings from previous owner/seller on the inside endpaper. Foxing present especially on the first couple of pages on each volume.
